Clusters for VR: Opportunities and Challenges

PC graphics technology, primarily driven by the video gaming industry, is becoming a possibility for the development of advanced virtual reality environments. The graphics and computational power required for virtual environments has been previously available exclusively on highend computing systems. Clustering multiple PCs to develop multi-processor multi-graphics systems capable of running an advanced virtual reality system is now a reality. This opens new opportunities for virtual reality in a wide range of application areas and presentation domains. However, virtual reality developers face many challenges to bring this technology to the general use. This paper discusses the author’s experiences and views on current state of PC technology for VR and its future.
